Home Stay Informed Announcements A common thread to avoid

Inflammation plays an important role as one of the body’s major weapons against bacteria, viruses, foreign particles and injury but when it gets out of control it can wreck havoc with your health.

Why worry about inflammation?

Uncontrolled inflammation is the common thread between heart disease, diabetes, depression, asthma, Alzheimer’s, arthritis, some forms of cancer, and many other chronic health conditions. Inflammation plays an important role as one of the body’s major weapons against bacteria, viruses, foreign particles and injury. It's a good thing, but not when it gets out of control.

Annual healthcare costs in the US for the most common chronic diseases—diabetes, heart disease, stroke, and asthma—exceed $446 billion (and all of these diseases are related to inflammation!).

What causes inflamation?

Many different things can trigger an inflammatory response.  Air pollution, pesticides, water pollution, and even excess calories are just a few examples of things that can cause inflammation.

Some foods also trigger inflammation. They include:

  • Artificial trans fats (look for the words hydrogenated, partially hydrogenated, or shortening to avoid these!)
  • High amounts of sugar (look for the words corn syrup, high fructose corn syrup, cane juice, dextrose, fructose, golden syrup, maltose, sorghum syrup and sucrose to limit added sugars)
  • High levels of Omega 6 fats (corn oil, safflower oil, sunflower oil, grapeseed oil, and cottonseed oil are high in pro-inflammatory fats)
  • Highly processed foods (cold cuts preserved with nitrates or sulfites, all purpose white flour, white bread products, packaged dinners—the list goes on and on!)
  • Feedlot-raised meats (corn fed beef) and confined pork and poultry
  • The majority of farmed fish (fed by-products of other animals instead of natural diet selections)
  • Some artificial food additives (aspartame and monosodium glutamate—MSG— can trigger inflammatory responses in some individuals)
  • Excess alcoholic beverages (beer, wine, and hard liquor)

Foods that Fight Inflammation

Just as there are foods that promote inflammation, there are also foods that fight inflammation. Here are some top choices:

  • Cold water fish (wild caught salmon, cod, trout, tuna, herring, and sardines)
  • Olive oil (first cold expeller pressed),non GMO canola oil, and walnut oil
  • Dark green lettuce, spinach, tomatoes and other typical salad veggies contain vitamin C and other antioxidants that suppress inflammation—choose organic lettuce and spinach whenever possible to avoid high levels of pesticides
  • Cruciferous veggies—broccoli, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts, and kale—are loaded with antioxidants and also contain antioxidant-boosting sulfur
  • 10% whole grains (loaded with antioxidants)
  • Green tea
  • Ginger
  • Turmeric (found in curry powder)
  • Garlic
  • Cherries and blueberries (choose organic whenever possible to avoid high levels of pesticides)
